‘SF/GREEN’; ‘North Beach meets the Bayview’2022 is a cross-cultural and cross-generational San Francisco artist community collaboration art exhibition bringing together creative artists of the SF Bayview and SF North Beach via artist community friendships.

Peter Shaw, a visual and environmental artist, and native Californian and 3rd generation San Franciscan has organized this unique San Francisco art presentation. At the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2019, Shaw re-located to Sonoma Co. Upon returning to San Francisco in Spring 2021, Shaw organized the San Francisco artists supporting SF artists art presentation ‘SF-Blue’2021 @Modernism West art gallery @Foreign Cinema in the SF Mission.

In this unique SF showing of ‘SF-GREEN’; ‘North Beach meets the Bayview’2021, Shaw is presenting his pandemic-made environmental-paintings ‘SideOfBarn’2020 and ‘MENDOCINO’2021, and his ‘AmericanSplatter’1988-1989 art-performance ‘result’ large-format artwork that engages a social-justice aesthetic-layer.

‘SF-GREEN’; ‘North Beach meets the Bayview’2021 exhibits the dynamic aesthetic achievements of artists in these two respective artist communities in San Francisco.
Social Justice and Environmental Justice have been real issues and of absolute concern to these artists in the Bayview and North Beach for decades, some living and working in San Francisco since the 1950s and 1960s.

In this show are notable artists from each SF community; Emory Douglas, a longtime resident of the Bayview, was the Minister of Culture of the Black Panther Party at its inception in the mid-1960s to early 1980s, and currently has a timeless art installation presentation @SFMOMA. Lawrence Ferlinghetti, poet/writer/painter/publisher, a longtime resident of North Beach, was the founder and owner of City Lights bookstore; and is/was the first paper back publishing company of high literature in the US.

Jack Hirschman, a San Francisco treasure for his renown ultra-expressive poetry readings, will be honored during the opening reception by current San Francisco Poet Laureate, Tongo Eisen-Martin. Hirschman passed this Summer in 2021, and in his passing, has been acknowledged as the ‘Last of the Beats’.

‘SF-GREEN’; is the first organized art exhibition exclusively focused on presenting together, artists of these two creatively unique and connected artist communities.

Marcel Duchamp said in c. 1920: “I do not believe in art; I believe in artists”. Duchamp also said; “It is not what you know that is important, it is what you believe that is important.”
